Jaun Carlos Aguilar
Guatemala City
Juan Carlos Aguilar is a sculptor who lives by the motto, “Art changes people, and that can make a country prosper.” In his restored colonial home in the oldest quarter of Guatemala City, he has created a multi-disciplinary space– functioning as a studio, art school, and salon dedicated to promoting the cultural value of art.
The son of a painter and a musician, Juan Carlos began sculpting at age 6. He trained in classical restoration at the University of San Carlos, but he credits much of his skill to years of self-study. He immersed himself learning anatomy, practicing classical techniques such as patina, and studying masters including Auguste Rodin, Camille Claudel, Alberto Giacometti, and Christopher Carbonel. He describes his process as: “I let my emotions flow and ensure that each work has its reason for being.”
Over the years, Juan Carlos has completed more than 2,800 sculptures and countless restorations for churches and private collections. He has also trained many aspiring Guatemalan artists to master sculpture techniques, from handbuilding to carving stone. “I don't expect money. I just want to be immortal through my works,” he explains. “I hope that in 200 or 300 years, someone will remember me. I hope that my work will be a source of pride for my country.”
“There's so much talent in Guatemala. Art changes people, and that can make a country prosper. We're very creative here; we have a strong identity. Guatemalan art is very rich and diverse.”
“Without culture, there is no knowledge.”
