Isabel Herrera

Guatemala City

Isabel Herrera is an experimental photographer from Guatemala City. While she always enjoyed photography as a creative outlet, her career was launched after mentoring from Luis Gonzáles Palma, a renowned Guatemalan artist who blends photography with magic realism. Gonzáles Palma encouraged Isabel to branch into instant photography, and the advice stuck. She purchased a vintage Polaroid camera and began experimenting.

Isabel’s work explores impressionistic moments. Armed with a Polaroid SX70 and a Mint SLR670-S, she captures ephemeral instants in both color and black and white. Isabel experiments with techniques such as emulsion lift, deforming the photograph’s thin film to create surreal effects on fabric and metal.

Isabel’s work has been showcased at Guatemala’s Sol del Rio Contemporary Art Gallery, Juannio’s annual Contemporary Latin American Art Auction, and international instant photography festivals in Germany, France, Italy, and the UK.

Photographs are not just images but mirrors into our souls, guides along the intricate path of life, encouraging us to embrace the magic woven into the fabric of our everyday existence.
